Mac Users Unite!

by Chris Seibold Sep 02, 2005

In the wake of the hurricane we should all help as much as we can. MyMac.com is providing a way for Mac users to help and get some nice stuff in the process. The drill is as follows: all the stuff is donated so 100% of the sale price will go straight to a charity that is actually helping people in the devastated areas. In short: you get good stuff and your money helps the people who have been victimized. So buy something, it is a Win-Win deal.

  • This is disappointing.  Why can’t we just help other people without having to “get stuff” in return.  Americans are among the most philanthropic people in the world.  Generously helping others in need is one of the things of which we should be most proud.  The people in New Orleans have been devastated by natural disaster.  We should all pitch in what we can.  We should stop consuming something for once and note what power our philanthropy can have in improving the situation for people in trouble.  Just give.  Forget about what you get in return.

  • I agree.  “Stuff” is NOT what they need, and while you may need some of the “stuff” they are selling, that’s fine and dandy—but the Katrina victim relief needs CASH.  It doesn’t have to be ‘laundered’ cash either.

It’s a sad promotion capitalizing on the disaster. Poor taste.  Worse yet, the spammers have already tapped into the disaster too—beginning to send “contribute here” messages to Phish your identity.

My promo for my listees is easy and not grandstanding:
I’ll double any cash donation you make.
    Simple and to the point.

  • Well, of course, cash is what they will get. You get the stuff. As far as just giving money that is ideal (fred I’ve donated two hundred to the red cross feel free to double it). Thing is a low profile firewire card might be something you need but if the company sent a low profile firewire card to the hurricane victims it wouldn’t do much good. So instead they donate the firewire card, ship it straight to whomever purchases it and the money from the sale goes straight to the Red Cross.
The manufacturers were kind enough to donate the products that would be of no use to hurricane victims (because not everyone produces sleeping bags and bottled water) to be turned into cash that will help the victims. In the end this is a way to monetize products that otherwise wouldn’t help the victims (not a big need for firewire hard drive enclosures right now)

  • There are no profits in this offer. No shipping or handling charges and all the money (even paypal fees are not deducted) goes to the charity.

  • Does anyone read before they throw their opinions around from the mountain top? People really need to learn hot to relax and stop being such a cynical bunch of SOB’s.

MyMac.com is doing a good thing. Try reading their plan for donation again before you start to condemn from your high horse what they are doing for these people in the south. If you have a reading comprehension problem have someone read and explain it to you.

They are giving cash, they are doing a good thing. Save the cynical jabs for those who deserve it.
